Latin Quarter

The hotel Parc Saint-Séverin is only a stone’s throw away from the river Seine and its famous flower vendors, the Sorbonne… the heart of the Latin Quarter!

The origins of the neighbourhood’s name…?

Let’s go back to the 12th century, when Paris University was located on the left bank of the Seine.
In 1253, Robert Sorbon founded a middle school for poor children. After many centuries, this institution – La Sorbonne – became world-renowned. The school was completely redesigned by the Cardinal Richelieu in 1883 and it is now one of the most prestigious Universities in Europe.
Another, perhaps more obvious reason for the Latin Quarter’s name, is that until 1793, Latin was an official language. The area is still very much influenced by the university; it is the home to other universities, high schools and middle schools. You will also find bookstores that specialise in poetry and philosophy.

Wander a little further into the neighbourhood and discover the Rue de la Harpe and its restaurants, the Rue de la Huchette and its stores and the Saint-Michel fountain – commissioned by the Baron Haussman in order to make a wall, situated across from the St. Michel bridge, more elegant. Go back up the boulevard Saint-Michel to discover the Luxembourg Palace and garden, and also the Panthéon where many great Frenchmen rest.
